Shangri-La’s Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa celebrated local golfing talent by hosting the Inter-Provincial Golf tournament together with HSBC Future Lions which was held on 28 and 29 August.
The HSBC Future Lions initiative has been leading the way in the golfing arena by supporting local children to excel in the sport. Shangri-La’s Hambantota stepped in to host the three-day tournament with accommodation, opening up a world class, golfing experience on its par-70 18-hole golf course to the youth.
The event kicked off with the players checking-in to the resort on 27 August for the tournament draw and practice sessions. The first day of the tournament teed off on Wednesday 28 August at 8:30 a.m. with a total of 20 junior golfers from areas such as Hambantota, Kilinochchi, Diyathalawa and Welisara, taking part. The format of the golf tournament was Strokeplay over 18 holes and played under the Rules of R&A and USGA.
Players appreciated the idyllic settings of the par-70, 18-hole golf course spread across a vast coconut palm plantation, with spectacular views of the Indian Ocean. The course offers lush fairways and challenging bunkers, with the Dune Area featuring subtle elevation changes and the Sapphire Mine showcasing generous greens with an abundance of water features, with challenges for beginners and professional golfers. Shangri-La’s Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa’s golf course is USGA (United States Golf Association) Course Rated and Slope Rated.
“It has been a rewarding experience for my team and I to host the Inter-Provincial Golf Tournament 2019 at the resort together with HSBC Future Lions, and provide a platform for the development of local talent,” said Shangri-La’s Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa General Manager Moshi Perera. “By engaging youth from grassroot levels in world class facilities, the resort hopes to actualise our vision of inspiring and building confidence in young golfers to take the sport to greater heights in the country.”
The awards ceremony for the Interprovincial Golf Tournament 2019 was held in the evening on Thursday 29 August at Ulpatha, the resorts Club House overlooking the 18th green. D.P.M.N.S. Kaushalya (Hambanthota) emerged as Overall Winner, whilst P.P. Thirusha Rashinda (Hambanthota) and Suthaskaran Sukiaran (Kilinochchi) were named the Overall 1st Runner-Up and 2nd Runner-Up respectively.
Team Kilinochchi emerged as Overall Team Winner and Team Hambantota emerged as Runner-Up in the Team category. Prizes for winners included stay vouchers and trophies from the resort, and much valued merchandise from HSBC.
