The Singer Schools rugby 2018 competition will kick off on 28 May after a brief stoppage for one week due to violence at school matches that were played in Colombo and Kurunegala recently.

Minister of Provincial Councils, Local Government and Sports, Faiszer Musthapha, said permission would be granted for rugby tournaments to be conducted under strict conditions. Speaking at a media briefing held at the Sports Ministry, the Minister said that those found guilty of perpetrating violence would be punished, while the sale of liquor in and around the ground would be prohibited and all future matches would be strictly controlled with the support of former Police lock and national skipper DIG (retd.) Hafeez Marso.

Officials from the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association, Sri Lanka Rugby and the Referees Society as well as school principals and officials were present at the event.
