Reiterating its commitment to supporting sports and empowering talents to inspire athletes, SLT-Mobitel will power the much-awaited 87th SLT-Mobitel Mahagastotte Festival of Speed 2021 as the title sponsor.
SLT-Mobitel is sponsoring this legendary event, which dates back to 1934, for the third consecutive year, after powering the races in 2018 and 2019. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and health constraints most leading racing events scheduled for 2020 did not take place. The SLT-Mobitel Mahagastotte festival of speed is scheduled to be held on 3 and 4 April at Mahagastotte, Nuwara Eliya.
Mobitel Chief Executive Officer Chandika Vitharana handed over the official sponsorship to Ceylon Motor Sports Club (CMSC) President Niroshan Pereira, the event partners for this highly-anticipated sporting event.
This year’s event will showcase motorcycles and a classic car event on 3 April, followed by a Motorcar event on 4 April. An awards ceremony and the presenting of trophies and certificates to winners will take place on both days.
The Mahagastotte Hill Climb has a rich heritage of over eight decades and named as the birth place of organised motor racing in Sri Lanka. CMSC, as the race organiser is well-respected as among the oldest sporting clubs in the country. Their first meet was a Hill Climb at the Mahagastotte Estate in Nuwara Eliya on 28 September 1934, and since then the races have featured as a regular annual event, giving birth to young talented racers throughout.
