Due to time constraints the Major League cricket tournament, scheduled to take place after the Lanka Premier League (LPL), has been scrapped by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).
Thus, the domestic season for 2021-22 will see only the SLC Major Limited-Over tournament, scheduled to commence on 27 October and run till 28 November, and the National Super League (former provincial tournament) which will take place from January-April 2022 being played. The Emerging tournament will also be run concurrently with the National Super League.
In between 5 and 23 December SLC will host the second edition of the LPL.
SLC will commence the new domestic season (2022-23) in July 2022 and Tournament Committee Chairman Samantha Dodanwela said: “The stakeholders have approved a structure and we will implement that. The relegation process will be implemented to reduce the number of teams playing in the Major League.”
There is a question mark over what guidelines the selectors will follow in selecting the squads for the National Super League without the Major League tournament taking place this year.
The Mercantile tournament is scheduled to take place in May-June 2022. (ST)
