Singer League 2019

St. Peter’s College kept their hopes alive for the Singer League 2019 when they edged out their traditional rivals Joes by 23/21 at Bambalapitiya.
Meanwhile there were wins for Trinity and Royal in their trophy encounters played at Mount Lavinia and Royal Complex respectively.
Trinity retain Canon de Seram Shield

Trinity College continued their good work when they edged out Thomians 17/11 at Mount Lavinia in order to secure the Canon De Seram trophy.
Trinity, though not at their peak, played well in patches but hit back strongly in the later half. Janidu Ratnayake was lightning fast along with the other winger Amith Kulatunge, scored a try each to take Trinity through. Meanwhile their last try was scored by burly prop forward Mahdee Abdullah. At the short breather Thomians led 11/7. The home team got in to an early lead when Trinity failed to touch down with an own try. Bimsara Iriyagama put over two penalties while Sadiq Ishaq touched down Thomians first try. But lightning pace Trinity winger, Janidu Ratnayake was unstoppable when he scored a try untouched passing four of the Thomians defenders. Minidu Jayasundera was on target with the kick at goal. Trinity hit back with two unanswered tries in the later half to seal the game.

Royal retains Maj Milroy Fernando Trophy

Isipathana 6 points
Royal beat Isipathana 19/6 in order to win the Major Milroy Fernando Trophy. Royal with this win will be having glimmer of hopes to beat Joes in their last game in order to have a chance to win the League. Royal received two yellow cards within five minutes to put Isipathana in to a 6/0 lead at the short breather. Royal scored their first try through Achitha Radeshan which was converted by Maleesha Perera to take 7/6 lead soon after the short breather. Royal’s second try was scored by Lehan Gunaratne with Dilan Goonawardena on target with the kick. Lahiru Ymal scored the last Royal try.

Peterites a yard closer to the League

St. Peter’s moves inches closer in order to clinch the Singer League 2019 when they edged out Joes 23/21 in a tensed encounter at Bambalapitiya.
St. Peter’s regained the Fr. Basil Weeratunga Memorial Shield after three years wait.
Ever-reliable Santhush Algama of Joes put his team in to an early 3/0 lead. Peterite skipper Bilal Hilmy who had a grand game scored the Bambalapitiya lads first try.
Rashen Gunawardena who initiated the next move saw Karunanayake scoring and Algama adding the extras to take the lead at 13/5. Nanayakkara cut the deficit through a simple penalty.
Peterite scored their next try through Nizran Mohamed and Nanayakkara conversion took them in to a 15/13 lead. Hasitha Wijesekara try for Joes and Shenal for Peter’s took the score to 20/18 favouring the home team. But it was short lived as Algama was on target with a penalty kick to take the lead at 21/20 favouring Joes. Nanayakkara put over the winning penalty for the home team when referee Priyantha Gunaratne blew the long whistle.
