Throwing a spotlight on Sri Lanka’s national sport, the Mercantile Volleyball Tournament recently reached a successful conclusion after several thrilling matches.
Ocean Lanka Ltd. and MAS Casualline, Mawathagama emerged champions in the Men’s and Women’s Super League categories respectively. Conducted for the eighth year, the tournament has been organised by the Mercantile Volleyball Association since its revival in 2012. The Mercantile Volleyball Championship is the main stable for many national players and is an eagerly anticipated event on the annual sports calendar.
The runners-up in the Super League category were Brandix Casualwear, Seeduwa in the women’s division while Courtaulds Clothing Lanka Ltd. claimed the gong in the men’s segment. In the Women’s ‘A’ Division, Omegaline Sports Club beat Maliban Biscuits Manufacturers while Hirdaramani, Kahathuduwa beat Maliban Biscuits Manufacturers for the Championship trophy.
MAS Unichela, Panadura beat their Koggala counterparts to claim the Men’s ‘A’ Division title. Maliban Biscuits Manufacturers emerged winners in the Men’s Championship category beating the Omegaline Sports Club. Gayan Mallikaratne of Ocean Lanka Ltd. and Deepika Bandara of MAS Casualline, Mawathagama were respectively adjudged the best male and female players of the tournament.
