Green Shuttle Fiesta 2019, the inaugural all-island inter-university and age group badminton tournament organised by the Badminton Club of National School of Business Management (NSBM), kicked off at NSBM Green University Town in Pitipana, Homagama on Saturday 3 August.The opening ceremony was attended by top NSBM officials, Vice Chancellor Dr. E.A. Weerasinghe, Deputy Vice Chancellor Chamindra Rathnayake and Head of Academic Development and Quality Assurance Baratha Dodankotuwa who graced the occasion as special guests.
The participating shuttlers, officials and the guests were welcomed by NSBM Badminton Club President Vidura Gamage, while the players’ oath was delivered by the Club Secretary Sayuru Jayasekara. Head of Student Affairs Mohamed Shafraz was also present. The organisers hope to enhance the enthusiasm towards badminton among energetic university students and school badminton players in the country by conducting the tournament. The tournament is also expected to uplift the unpolished talents of young badminton players within NSBM, the first-ever green university in South Asia. Over 700 participants from all over the country will be in action during the nine-day event. The matches are being held under a number of categories, namely the mixed team championship and individual men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles for university students. Open age group championship will also be conducted under same categories for players under-11, 13, 15, 17 and 19. The organisers have arranged shuttle services from the tournament venue to Kottawa city centre during the competition days for the convenience of the participants.
The tournament will conclude on 11 August.
