The official sponsorship handing-over ceremony took place recently, in the presence of senior management from Ceylon Biscuits, and representatives of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation (SLVF), organisers of the Championship.
Recognised as Sri Lanka’s national sport, Munchee’s main aim in continuously sponsoring volleyball is to rekindle its spirit and thus supporting it to become an integral part of the culture of our nation. They also are keen on helping to form a strong platform for talented players to showcase their skills.
SLVF President MP Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said, “We express our sincere thanks to Munchee for once again supporting us. They have been our strength over the past 12 years and have helped build the sport to a firm national level footing and also has been vital in promoting talented players’ to achieve their dreams. As a corporate they have shouldered this responsibility singlehandedly and with their assistance we hope to ensure the growth of the sport in the future too.”
Over 2000 teams representing island-wide districts, with 24,200 men and women volleyball players, and 220 Super League Players, are expected to participate in this important tournament.
Commenting on sponsoring the Tournament, CBL Chief Executive Officer Nalin Karunaratne said, “Munchee’s partnership with the National Volleyball Championship now spans 12 successful years. As the national sport of our country, we take pride in creating a strong platform for players to showcase their strengths and the opportunity to be selected to play at national level. We are committed to the sport and believe volleyball fans too are looking forward to this annual tournament.”This year’s Munchee National Volleyball Championship will be held for both men’s and women’s categories under two phases, i.e. the Super League and Novices tournaments. In the Super League tournament, 16 teams representing eight women’s and men’s teams each, inclusive of top national level players, will vie for this tournament title. For the Novices tournament, players representing the 25 districts island-wide will compete against other districts. Though these players are not in the top league, through the Munchee National Volleyball Championship, they and their clubs are able to play in a tournament that is recognised at national levels.Throughout the years, by supporting this important volleyball tournament, Munchee has provided novice players a strong platform to demonstrate their sporting abilities and thus gain a place in the national team.
Applications for the Munchee National Volleyball Championship Novices tournament will be accepted from 15 September onwards, and for the Super League tournament from 15 December. The district-level matches are scheduled to commence after 15 September.
