Havelock Sports Club, powered by Mobitel, lifted the Clifford Cup recently after drubbing Air Force Sports Club decisively by 37 points (four tries, four conversions and three penalties) to 21 points (three tries and two conversions) in the final played at the Racecourse Grounds in Reid Avenue over the weekend.
Mithun Hapugoda starred for the Havvies, achieving a break just three minutes into the kick-off before marching onto the try line to get his team off to a roaring start with Riza Muabarak slotting in the extras to take an early lead.
Lasindu Ishan played aggressively in the second half with a try on the hour mark following a couple of hand-offs. Although Air Force SC Thilina Bandara tried to make a breakthrough, the Havvies had brought their A game to the field and sealed their win. Havvies demonstrated true grit to claw themselves to the top of the heap at the final whistle of the tournament, surpassing other teams tipped to win the cup. The Havvies have a wonderful blend of experienced players and young turks who have gelled well together.
