An indoor cricket tournament was organised by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Berlin, in partnership with the Füchse Berlin Lions Cricket club on 30 December 2018, at the Hatzfeldallee indoor stadium.
The event was held in celebration of 65 years of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Germany, with the participation of cricket clubs in Berlin representing cricket playing nations.
Addressing the cricket enthusiasts, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Germany Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi explained the significance of cricket in Sri Lanka, which is no longer just a sport, but a shared passion that is a source of fun and a force for unity in the country.
Ambassador Hettiarachchi also highlighted the need of strengthening the bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Germany, beyond political and economic spheres and to include new areas of cooperation such as sports and culture through which the positive relations could be further strengthened. The need to popularise the sport in Germany, which has been an associate Member of the International Cricket Council since 1999 was also highlighted during the event.
As a highlight, the staff of the Embassy together with the Sri Lankan community in Berlin played a friendly match at the end of the tournament.
The winners of the tournament were presented with valuable gift items sponsored by Sri Lanka Cricket Board and Sri Lankan Airlines.
