Another tester at home for Kandy against the unbeaten Army this weekend
By Shamseer Jaleel
Two unbeaten teams in the Inter Club Rugby League, Kandy Sports Club and Army Sports Club, will lock horns today at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium today. Kick-off is scheduled at 3.45 p.m.
Kandy, though won both their games at home, were far below the expected usual high standards. They struggled against the Sailors later in the second half. Their bench looks ordinary this season.
Losing out due to Richard’s, Ranjan’s, Wilwara’s, Roshan’s and Ali’s injuries is a big worry for Upcountry lads. They have made some changes for this outing, resting Oshan Perera and Tharindu Chanaka.
Their places will be taken over by Lavanga Perera and Ganuka Dissanayake. Heshan Kalhara, too, looks a doubtful starter. Led by Nigel Kandy SC’s main strength is their three-quarter-line full of stars. Tharinda Ratwatte, Kavindu Perera, Lavanga Perera and Thilina Weerasinghe are all expected to be at their best. Given a good condition ideal for rugby, it will be tough for the Soldiers to stop the powerful Kandy three-quarter-line. Kandy beat Air Force through a bonus point win while their Navy game was a close one with a two-point win.
Meanwhile the Soldiers will heavily depend on Manoj Kumara, Mohamed Rizvi, Senanayake, and Gayan Salinda’s kicking abilities if the Army to contain the Kandy outfit. They drew with a tough CH & FC outfit in their opener and later on beat Air Force with an easy bonus point win.
