The IPL Player Registration closed on 4 February with 1097 players (814 Indian and 283 overseas players) signing up to be a part of the IPL 2021 Player Auction set to take place in Chennai on 18 February, a day after the end of the second Test between India and England. The Auction will begin from 3 p.m. onwards.
All the franchises released the list of the retained and released players in the last month and a few top overseas cricketers were let go off by the teams. Among them are Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch who all had a poor IPL 2020 season, and they will be hoping that a new franchise picks them again the auction.
The players from as many as 15 foreign countries have registered for the IPL 2021 auction and it remains to be seen who all get picked for the upcoming season. Only 61 maximum spots are up for grabs with only 22 of them for the overseas players. A total of 283 foreign cricketers have registered for the auction. The players’ list incorporates 207 capped, 863 uncapped and 27 Associate players.
Maximum 42 players are from Australia while 38 cricketers from South Africa are hoping to get a bid in the auction. Cricketers from Nepal, Ireland, UAE, and the USA have also registered and it remains to be seen if any of the players from these countries will get picked.

“If every franchise were to have a maximum of 25 players in their squad, 61 players will be taken in the auction (of which up to 22 may be overseas players),” stated the IPL media advisory.
