The Sri Lankan national cricket team, which is presently in New Delhi playing their third test match in their series against India, met High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to India Chitranganee Wagiswara during their visit to the city and were hosted to a dinner reception at the High Commission.
The team is headed by Manager Asanka Gurusinghe and the team’s Captain Dinesh Chandimal.
At the opening of the dinner reception, the High Commissioner remarked that cricket was a popular game in Sri Lanka as well as in South Asia and that the game was also a unifying factor in a multicultural country while stating that the unity, team spirit and sportsmanship provide an inspiration to the youth of the country. The High Commissioner added that the young team was going through challenging times but the country was confident that they would rise to the challenge. She wished the team all the best for the test match, which started on 2 December.
Several political figures such as Lok Sabha MP Dr. Udit Raj and MP Vijay Jolly, diplomats from cricket-playing nations, journalists from the print media, academics and members of the business community as well as Sri Lankans living in New Delhi were present at the reception.
The 15-member Sri Lankan cricket team arrived in India in November for a series of three test matches, three ODIs and three T20Is. The ODI series will begin on 10 December and the first match will be played at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. The T20I series will be played on 20, 22 and 24 December in Cuttack, Indore and Mumbai respectively.
