Havies made a bold fight back late in the second half to pull off a thrilling 31/20 win over their traditional rivals, CR& FC, and win the Matthysz Trophy.
Omalka Gunaratne drew first blood for the Red Shirts with Reza Rafaideen taking the kicking duties due to Tharinda Ratwatte not being selected by the team management at Longdon Place.
Havies skipper Niroshan Fernando was given a high tackle by CR & FC fly half Sivaraj. The Referee awarded the try to Havies.
Chamara Dabare scored next for the Park Club with Reza Mubarak adding the extras to take the breather at 14/7. Omalka, who was unstoppable, scored again. CR next worked their three-quarter line smoothly, ending in a fantastic try for Reza Rafaideen, who touched down at a lightning pace. Lasindu Karunathilake clearly punched Shemal Weerasekara’s face. A shoulder charge from Shemal Weerasekara to Karunathilake started the incident. A clear Red Card offence by Lasindu was missed by the Assistant Referee. This is sure to be caught by the Citing Officer and a Red Card will be on the way for Lasindu. Mithun Hapugoda, who arrived late in the second half, did a solo run of over 40 metres to touch down a fantastic running try. Forward Dushmantha Priyadharshana, who always puts his name on the score sheet, did not fail to this time as he scored next. Mithila Perera scored the last try for CR, but it was too late for a comeback.
