HNB Grameen, Expolanka and NTB big winners at MCA “D” Division 40-Over League Tournament

Whilst, HNB Grameen scored resounding back-to-back wins, Expolanka Group and Nations Trust Bank “B” inflicted heavy defeats on their opponents, in the ongoing 15th Ceylon Cold Stores PLC sponsored Elephant House Lemonade Trophy – MCA “D” Division 40-Over League Tournament 2018, continued last weekend.

On Saturday HNB Grameen beat Airport and Aviation by 82 runs, riding on second half centuries by S. Ranasinghe (77) and M. Fernando (83); A&A, chasing 286 runs to win, started off all guns blazing with an opening stand of 110 runs in 73 balls between W.N.M. Perera (86) and H.N. Yapa (45); but suddenly they ran out of fuel and stalled – 203 all out in 30.5 overs.

On Sunday, HNB Grameen trounced Hemas Group by 216 runs; they piled up 314 for 8 in 40 overs with Dinusha Fernando hitting a hurricane 129 in 99 balls, inclusive of eight sixes and 10 fours; Fernando was associated in a 113-run stand in 73 balls for the fifth wicket with S. Ranasinghe (76); Hemas shot out for 98 runs having no answer to A. Madusanka, who finished with incredible figures of 4.4-1-23-5.

Expolanka went home early, as their three-pronged spin attack of M. Supendra (3-32-3), H. Hewanayake (5.4-12-3) and A. Wijeratne (5-12-3) rattled MAST Industries – shot out for 57 runs in 16.4 overs; earlier on, Expolanka scored 242 for 7 in 40 overs, Dharshana Hettiarachchi top scoring with a well compiled 95 runs in 120 balls, inclusive of 10 boundaries.

NTB “B” too went home early with a comprehensive 132-run win, as their bowlers T. Dabare (4 for 13), R. Perera (3 for 11) and S. Srilal (3 for 18) came down like a ton of bricks on DPMC – 59 all out in 19.4 overs; the bankers earlier on scored 191 in 38 overs with useful contributions coming from N. Saputhanthri (45) & T. Dabare (55).

Softlogic Finance registered the top team total – 332 for 5 in 40 overs and went on to win by a heavy margin of 133 runs over Delmage Group – 199 for 9 in 40 overs.

For Softlogic, two fireball centurions came up in a process, Denver Foux (105 in 78 balls inclusive of four sixes and 14 fours) and M. Wijetillake (115 in 99 balls, inclusive of seven sixes and 12 fours), who were associated in a 197-run stand in 149 balls for the second wicket.

The tournament will be continued on 1, 3 and 4 March with a card of nine matches.
