SriLankan Airlines continued its strong tradition of excellence in the sporting arena with a dazzling display at the 36th Mercantile Badminton Association Inter-Firm Team Badminton Championships 2019 in Colombo recently.
The SriLankan team of former national player First Officer Udaya Weerakoon (Flight Operations) and R.M.L. Muthukuda (SriLankan Catering) was crowned Masters A-Division Champions, defeating McLaren’s team ‘A’ in the final. Weerakoon was adjudged the Best Player.
The national carrier’s team also won Runners-Up in the Men’s Over-40 B-Division, falling to Hayleys in the final, with the team comprising Anuraji De Silva (Cargo Operations), Sujith Wijethunga (Cargo Operations), Dayantha Fernando (SriLankan Catering), and Mahesh Jayasinghe (Security Operations).
The airlines’ team also placed third in the Men’s Open F-Division with the team of Dayantha Fernando, Mahesh Jayasinghe, Dasitha Dahanayake, Thilina Karunaratne, Pubudu Athukorala, Shiromal Fernando, and Nuwan Jayawickrema.
The tournament took placed between 22 September and 27 October at the Mercantile Badminton Association Headquarters and G.T. Jayasuriya Stadium in Colombo.
