Both the girls and boys of Gateway College, Kandy won their basketball matches at the inaugural Quadrangular Encounter, which was worked off at the basketball court of Gateway College, Kandy.

The event was organised to mark the 20th anniversary of Gateway College, Kandy, which is one of the leading schools of the Central Province.

The girls started off the evening with a 29-16 win over Hillwood College’s girls. The visitors left it too late for a comeback, and ultimately their poor defence cost them the game. Madhukesha Pathmanathan of Gateway was in top form, scoring 12 points for the winning outfit while eight points came from S.U. Ratnayake of Hillwood College.

In the boys’ event, once again Gateway College, Kandy beat St. Sylvester’s College 58-26. Ganeth Amadoru was in cracking form for the winning team, scoring 18 points.

Gateway Group Chairman Dr. Alles and the heads of the participating institutions graced the occasion.

Action will now shift to the Trinity College Rugby Stadium in Pallekelle on 6 February for the netball and football encounters as well as the awards ceremony.

The netball encounter between Gateway College, Kandy and Hillwood College will take place at 2.45 p.m. while the football fixture between Trinity College and St. Sylvester’s College will kick off at 4.30 p.m. (SJ)
