South Asia’s leading Grande Dame, the Galle Face Hotel, is a testimony to both Sri Lanka’s colonial past and its independent present. Given the strength of the hotel’s history and heritage, the iconic property recently inaugurated the ‘Cyril Gardiner Trophy 2018’, an inter-hotel six-a-side softball cricket tournament at Moors Sports Club Ground. Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs Minister John Amaratunga graced the event.
The tournament was the first of its kind organised among hotels in Colombo, with 16 leading hotels, 29 teams and 232 players participating. The tournament serves as an opportunity for leading hotels in Sri Lanka to strengthen their relationships with each other, and enhance goodwill so that they can work together to create a world-class hospitality industry in Sri Lanka.
Galle Face Hotel Chairman and owner Sanjeev Gardiner proudly announced that the ‘Cyril Gardiner Trophy’ would be an annual event. “The Galle Face Hotel is proud to organise the first inter-hotel six-a-side softball cricket tournament. We hope that events like this will strengthen camaraderie in the hotel industry. Together with the other leading hotels in Colombo, we look forward to improving Sri Lanka’s hospitality sector,” Gardiner said.
Cinnamon Lakeside won the Cyril Gardiner Trophy 2018, and Taj Samudra was placed runners up of the event. The ladies cricket tournament was won by Shangri-La Hotel Colombo and Galle Face Hotel earned the place of runners up.
