Galle Cricket Club celebrated its 142nd Anniversary with a well-attended members’ get-together recently.
Air Vice Marshal (Rtd.) Ravi Arunthavanathan graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He had played for Richmond, Southern combined schools and the Air Force.
He was also the Tournament Director of the first ever ICC tournament organised in Sri Lanka – U19 Youth World Cup in the year 2000 where 16 countries participated.
During his tenure as the President (1996 to 2001) Galle International Stadium came into being with the Test Match with New Zealand played in June 1998. He took over as the President from Ana Punchihewa, then incumbent President SLC and handed over to Jayantha Dharmadasa, a Chairman Interim committee. After the Tsunami disaster, as the Patron of the Club, he along with Jayantha Dharmadasa got it back to what it is today.
Galle CC Senior Vice President Shanthilal Abeygunawardhana and its General Secretary Gajaba Pitigala were also present. Incumbent President Kumar Samarasinghe and the Organising Committee should be complimented for the grand show put on.
