G. Thivakaran, known as Thiva and a live wire in the game of hockey, passed on yesterday (24 October) after a brief illness.
He served the Mercantile Hockey Association with distinction as an Official. He represented the HNB as an Executive Committee Member from 1993/94 to 1997/1998. He went on to be the Assistant Treasurer in 2007/08 to 2009/10. He was elevated to the high position of Vice President from 2008 to 2010/11. He toured South India in 1997 and Perak and Penang in 2000 as an official and also to Ipoh and Penang in 2000 with the over 35 team. He was a high-ranking executive of Hatton National Bank.
From the time he became a Committee Member in 1993, his pioneering efforts to promote hockey at HNB enabled the Bank to win many championships commencing in 1997, and it owes him a great debt of gratitude.
Former MHA President Dennis de Rosayro said Thiva made a much valued contribution towards the promotion of Mercantile Hockey. “My colleagues in the MHA join me in expressing our heartfelt sympathies to his wife and family,” Rosayro added.
