Sachin de Silva to defend Donald Steel
By Shamseer Jaleel
Promising young golfer Sachin De Silva will defend his title when he tees off at the Donald Steel Trophy 2022, which will take place at the Victoria Golf and Country Resort (VGCR) course on 5 February.
Tee off is expected to be at 7 a.m. with the prize giving taking place same night at the VGCR from 7 p.m. onwards.
Kayla Perera, who won the Ladies Gross at the Pam Fernando Trophy last year, will miss out this time round as she will be pursuing her higher studies in the USA. This year it will be the 24th year in which VGCR will be organising this mega event at Rajawella. Another ever green golfer, Ahalya Rajan accounted for three events in the 2021 tournament too will be in action in the 2022 event. She accounted for the Ladies Nearest to the PIN, Ladies Nett winner and Ladies Gross runner-up.
Chamath Kulasinghe won the initial trophy in 1999 and the most number of wins were registered by Martin G. Ebert (3), Sidath Wettimuny (3) and Ian Tait (3). Youngest to win this event was Haroon Aslam when he accounted for the trophy when he was just 16 years. This year there could be some exciting youngsters on the card. One of them being the 13-year-old Colombo International School student Reshan Algama, who was in top form at the Burdett Trophy. He is in prime form at present, and his long-range drives plus pinpoint accuracy in putting could be a threat for many players.
