Skipper of the unbeaten 1982 Isipathana rugby outfit and top-class former referee Dilroy Fernando will be Chief Guest for the Royal College vs Isipathana College rugby encounter which is played for Major Milroy Fernando Trophy. This encounter will take place on 14 August at the Havelock Park.
Dilroy who played as fly-half for Isipathana College, had to cut short his playing career due to health concerns, but that did not hold him back in achieving some great milestones in rugby officiating and the rugby administration field. He was the first Sri Lankan to be trained as a World Rugby Educator in 2001 while he also achieved the rare distinction of officiating as an Assistant Referee at the 1998 Commonwealth Games final between Fiji and New Zealand in Malaysia, the 2002 Asian Games XVs final between Japan and South Korea in Incheon and also as Assistant Referee during the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai.
The Major Milroy Fernando Trophy was donated by Dilroy’s father Colonel Dudley Fernando in memory of his son (Dilroy’s brother) Milroy who fell victim to a landmine explosion in Omanthai.
