Schools Rugby returns after two years wait
By Shamzeer Jaleel
Sri Lanka Schools Rugby League 2022 will kick off in the third week of June 2022 with a game between Kingswood and Joes in Colombo. The event organised by Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) will end after the first round and a super round by early August 2022 allowing the SLSRFA to conduct the Knockout event soon after which will give a full month of getting back to the Books for the last year players who will sit for their Advanced level examinations which will take place in October 2022. This event returns after a lapse of two years where the 2020 league could complete only a couple of matches before the COVID handed off the entire globe.
Each team will play each other in their respective group, giving them five group games for a team. At the end of the first round, the top two seeds from each group will proceed for a super round and will play two more games against the top two seeds from the opposing group to determine the league winner. Still, it is not clear if the organisers will adopt the same rules for the other grouping as well.
Further rugby loving public await a fair system where there are promotions and demotions to keep the level of competition at a high standard. On earlier years there was a system where the last two teams in each group gets demoted while the first two teams in Segment B and Segment C gets promoted to higher groups.
After the break for Advanced level examinations in October, one month later the usual selections encounters are expected to take place for the Junior Asiad 2022 which will take place in Taipei during December 2022. Defending champions, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, South Korea and Taipei will lock horns in the round robin encounter where the winner will book their berth for the Division 1 Junior World Rugby Tournament 2023.
