Sri Lankan medal winners at the 2018 Commonwealth Games were felicitated in a ceremony organised by the Sports Ministry recently. This event was organised by newly appointed Sports Minister Faiszer Mustapha and his predecessor Dayasiri Jayasekara.
All six medallists received cash awards, while the Sports Minister promised that the coaches too will receive their rewards in the near future.
In total, Sri Lanka’s Weightlifters and Boxers achieved 1 Silver and 5 Bronze medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games which took place in Gold Coast, Australia, the most successful Commonwealth Games for the island’s athletes.
Indika Dissanayake won the Silver in Weightlifting while Chathuranga Lakmal and Dinusha Gomes accounted for the two Bronzes. Anusha Kodituwakku, Thiwanka Ranasinghe, and Vidanalage Bandara accounted for the Bronze medals in Boxing. Sri Lanka ended at number 31 in the medals table, which was led by hosts Australia, followed by England and India.(SJ)
