The third edition of the Commando Challenge Supercross 2018, a racing event for both cars and motorbikes organised by the Commando Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders (SLARDAR) and CEAT Sri Lanka, is set to flag off on 5 August at the Commando Regiment Training School (CRTS) in Uva Kuda Oya.
The highly-anticipated Supercross will be carried out on an international-standard track known to be one of the longest, widest and quickest in the local racing scene. The track is set up in an area of historical significance named Balaharuwa where King Dutugemunu’s main training ground for his warriors was thought to have existed centuries ago. Both the 1.7 km racing car track and the 1.4 km bike track have been created with the technical guidance and supervision of professionals from SLARDAR. A total of 12 racing car events and 10 motorbike events will test the skills of some of the finest drivers and riders in the country. Large crowds are expected at the event where they will be treated to an up-close-and-personal view of the most thrilling racing action in the country.
Addressing the audience gathered at the launch event, Major General R.A. Nugera - Colonel of the Regiment (Commando Regiment) stated: “The third edition of the Commando Challenge Supercross will build on the outstanding display of motor racing brilliance that we witnessed over the past two years at this spectacular location. The unique setting of the race track, in a part of the country that is rich in history and takes us back in time to the era of King Dutugemunu and his brave warriors, will definitely enhance the experience for the drivers and riders as well as the thousands of spectators expected to show up the event. Both the tracks are of international standard and designed using the knowledge and experience of experts in the field and will therefore provide a stern test of their motor racing talent and skills.”
SLARDAR President Kamil Hussain stated: “We are excited to be associated with the Commando Regiment. This is the 4th edition in the Hutch Sri Lanka Super Series 2018 which is a joint effort by SLARDAR and AMRC. With its historically significant backdrop and a world-class race track, Sri Lankan racing fans are presented with something very unique to enjoy. These races are an ideal platform for our highly-talented drivers and riders to showcase skills and gain valuable experience competing against the toughest in the country. We wish all of them the very best and we all look forward to a day of enthralling racing action. SLARDAR is celebrating its 35th anniversary and this event is a historical event in the racing calendar. This year for the first time in the history of motor racing in the country, the winner of the SLGT category and MX Motorcycles will both be awarded a brand new car sponsored by Maxxis tyres, Mobil and Promowatch events while the winners of Ford Laser event and the Supermotard event will be awarded a brand new motorcycle each sponsored by Stafford Motor Co Ltd.”
