Avishka Tharindu celebrating his half-century for Jaffna in the second innings
Kavindu Pathiratne had a good game for Jaffna taking three Colombo wickets and scoring an undefeated 27 to force a draw
Colombo secured their first win of the National Super League 4-day tournament when they took first innings points off Jaffna in their match played at the Pallekele Cricket Stadium which ended in a draw yesterday.
After dismissing Jaffna for 199, Colombo took a first innings lead of 90 when they replied with 289, largely due to the seventh wicket pair Manoj Sarathchandra and Prabath Jayasuriya who carried their partnership to 72 valuable runs continuing from the third day. Jayasuriya was dismissed for 44 scored off 75 balls (6 fours), but Sarathchandra hung around 120 balls for 57 (2 fours, 1 six) before he was the last to be dismissed by former Royal College fast bowler Kavindu Pathiratne who captured three of the four wickets to fall yesterday to end with figures of 3 for 48. Fast bowling all-rounder Lahiru Madushanka also ended with a similar haul conceding 32 runs.
At tea Jaffna looked in danger of losing the match outright being five down for 117 and a lead of only 27, but Avishka Tharindu and Lahiru Madushanka rescued them from further calamity by figuring in a face-saving stand of 94 for the sixth wicket. Tharindu scored a fifty off 80 balls (5 fours, 1 six) and Madushanka 43 off 68 balls (4 fours, 1 six). Following their dismissals Kavindu Pathiratne (27*) and Dilum Sudeera (17*) saw Jaffna through safely till the end at 229-8.
At Rangiri Dambulla Stadium the match between Kandy and Dambulla was abandoned as a draw without a ball being bowled on all four days due to bad weather. ST
