The Colombo Hockey and Football Club (CH & FC), one of the oldest and leading rugby clubs in Sri Lanka chaired by veteran sportsman Shammi Silva who is also the incumbent President of Sri Lanka Cricket, has decided to form their very own women’s rugby team.
At the invitation of the clubs’ Rugby Chairman Major Tanesh B. Dias and the Rugby Committee, over 30 players from all over the country attended the inaugural training session, which was held at the Racecourse International Stadium on 14 October led by the Gymkhana Club’s coaching staff.
Major Dias continued to say that this was an absolutely great initiative taken to commence women’s rugby at CH by veteran rugby professional Dilroy Fernando along with Sammy Akbar and Ashan Ransilige.
He thanked them sincerely for their tireless efforts to always improve the sport.
Currently, there are only four A-division club teams in Sri Lanka who compete in women’s rugby competitions, and CH & FC aim to compete in future tournaments held by Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR).
The club has already acquired several sponsors who will contribute to the formation of the CH & FC women’s rugby team, including John Keells Holdings, Quickee, Classic Travels, Chinese Dragon, and Sri Lanka Insurance, to name a few.
