The 10th Munchee National Volleyball Championship concluded last Saturday at the National Youth Services Council Indoor Stadium where the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and Sri Lanka Air Force emerged champions in the men’s and women’s categories respectively in the Super League.
During a thrilling encounter in the Super League men’s category, Ceylon Electricity Board defeated Sri Lanka Army three sets to nil with scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-20 while in a closely-competed women’s final Sri Lanka Air Force beat Sri Lanka Army 3-1 with scores of 21-25, 25-18,35-33 and 25-15.
Romesh Ranawaka of CEB (men) and J.H.D Prasadini (women) of Sri Lanka Air Force received the Most Valuable Player awards in the Super League category.
Meanwhile, in the Men’s Novices category, SLAOC Sports Club, Galle trounced Golden Tigers Sports Club, Kurunegala 3-2 with scores of 25-22, 25-27, 25-18 22-25 and 15-11. In the Novices Women’s bracket Boyagane Siri Parakum Sports Club of Galigamuwa easily won the title by defeating Rathnapala Sports Club of Mahauswewa 3-0 with scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25 -18.
P.H.G Ariyaratne of SLAOC Sports Club, Galle and H.P.N.S Gunawardane of Boyagane Siri Parakum were adjudged the best players in the Novices tournament.
The awards presentation was held under the patronage of Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara, Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, the President of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, and Nalin B. Karunaratne the Chief Executive Officer of Ceylon Biscuits Ltd.
The Munchee National Volleyball Championship, which is sponsored by the flagship brand of Ceylon Biscuits Ltd, was conducted over one and half months with the participation of around 4,000 teams representing all 25 districts in the country.
