Carlos Brathwaite who destroyed the Galle Gladiators batting with four wickets celebrates a dismissal with compatriot Fabian Allen
Kamindu Mendis contributed a steady 44 in Kandy Falcons run chase
By Sa’adi Thawfeeq
Kandy Falcons secured their second win in the ongoing Lanka Premier League with a clinical performance that saw them coast to a five-wicket win over Galle Gladiators with five overs to spare in the second double-header played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium yesterday.
Galle’s batting was destroyed by West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite with figures of 4 for 14 in the first power play that saw them limp to 121-8. The pitch suited Brathwaite’s style of bowling and he could have easily ended up with a five-for if not for two catches being spilled off him. He was named Player of the Match.
Galle who was with their backs to the wall at 28-5 could have been in a much worse plight if not for a sixth wicket stand of 65 between Movin Subasingha and Imad Wasim who were both dropped before they had scored. The pair stuck it out hitting six fours and two sixes between them with Subasingha making 40 off 38 balls and Wasim 34 off 39 balls. Kandy had the opportunity to really wrap up the Galle innings but poor catching allowed them to post a total which was still below par. Overall, it was a sub-standard batting performance by Galle who suffered their second straight defeat.
With not a demanding target to chase down Kandy knocked the runs off quite comfortably despite losing half the side. Kamindu Mendis made the most of it with a steady innings of 44 off 34 balls (4 fours, 2 sixes).
