Badminton Nationals kick off in Colombo

shuttlers from all over the country gunning for the coveted ‘National Champion’ titles, offers a total of Rs. 1 million in prize money.

These two most important tournaments in the country’s badminton calendar are being organised by the Sri Lanka Badminton (SLB) with the support of Sri Lanka Schools Badminton Association, and were launched with a colourful opening ceremony.

Sports Development Department Director General Dhammika Muthugala was the Chief Guest, and Sri Lanka Badminton President Rohan de Silva and Sri Lanka Schools Badminton Association President Sampath Weragoda Guests of Honour at this occasion, which was also attended by senior officials of both organisations.   

Competitions will be held under 24 categories during the Senior Nationals, while the Junior Nationals will see young shuttlers in action under 18 different events. 

Apart from the open titles, players will be looking to bag honours in Under-23, Over 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65 and 70 Men’s and Women’s Singles as well as the Over 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65 and 70 Men’s and Women’s Doubles.

The Junior Nationals will see young shuttlers competing under 18 categories in five age groups, namely under-11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 Boys’ and Girls’ Singles and Under-13, 15, 17 and 19 Boys’ and Girls’ Doubles.
