Former Trinity rugby player, coach and top administrator Alex Lazarus passed away yesterday in the morning hours at the Trinity College Bordering House.
Alex played for Trinity College in 1966 and 67 under Ajith Abeyratne and later on coached the outstanding Trinity 1987 outfit under Tyrelle Rajapakse who remained not only unbeaten but they snatched all the trophies on offer. They won the Bradby 7/3 and 19/7, beat Thomians 56/0 in the Canon de Seram Trophy. Their line was crossed only once the whole season.
Later on, Alex went on to coach Kandy SC from 1989 to 1992 helping the upcountry club to secure the first Cup in 1992.
One of the 1987 players in the outfit Inthi Marikar who is the current Trinity Rugby Technical Advisor speaking from New Zealand said: “He was a top man, honest and tough to everyone, he was not only a coach, he was a friend, and cared for us like his own, it’s very sad he is gone, but this is the only certainty in life! May his soul rest in peace. We will miss him.” (SJ)
