Sri Lanka secured third place beating Hong Kong 75/49 in the play-off at the 11th Asian Youth Netball Championship 2019, which took place at the Kashima Sports Centre in Japan.
Sri Lanka lost to Malaysia 72/54 and Hong Kong lost to Singapore 62/36.
The real turn came when young Ganya Senanayake, barely 18 years, came in replacing skipper and goalkeeper Tharushi Illangarathna. Ganya was omnipresent defending and intercepting many Hong Kong attacks and kept the visitors away from scoring freely.
Malaysia beat the defending champs Singapore 57/48 to become the champions. Thailand finished fifth defeating Brunei 47/43 and Taipei beat Nepal 67/16 to finish in seventh place. India, Japan and South Korea finished in ninth, 10th and 11th place respectively. (SJ)
