The prestigious ‘Shakespeare Shield’ will tee-off its 110th edition tomorrow at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC).
Organisers said 24 teams vied for glory at the competition last year, Sri Lanka’s pioneering corporate tournament, which was worked off despite challenges posed by the COVID pandemic.
The ‘Shakespeare Shield’ tournament is played in a stableford format, and it is the only Board event open to corporates. It is a team event where two member players from any registered company, diplomatic institution, government agency, police or the armed forces of Sri Lanka, can participate.
The tournament is named after W. Shakespeare, a former Chairman of Carson Cumberbatch PLC, who was elected to the RCGC Committee in 1908. It was he who initiated the first ‘Foursomes Competition’ for private companies, banks and State institutions, and has been on the annual calendar of RCGC since 1911. The tournament has been sponsored exclusively by Carson Cumberbatch since then.
