Sri Lanka’s oldest corporate golf tourney, the ‘Shakespeare Shield’, is sponsored by Carson Cumberbatch PLC, and its 109th edition will tee off this Sunday at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC).
This prestigious tourney is an annual board event at the RCGC, and is the only competition open to members and teams from registered companies, diplomatic institutions, government agencies, police and the armed forces of Sri Lanka. It is a one-day stable-ford event, making it exciting and narrowing the margin for error.
The Shakespeare Shield Golf Tournament is named after W. Shakespeare, a former Chairman of Carson Cumberbatch PLC, who was elected to the RCGC Committee in 1908. It was he who initiated the first ‘Foursomes Competition’ exclusively for private companies, banks and state institutions. The tournament was initiated in his honour in 1911 and has been on the annual calendar since.
Last year, Softlogic Holding's Niloo Jayathilake and Dihan Dedigama took home the coveted Shakespeare Shield, with Niloo Jayathilake becoming the first woman to win the 108-year-old annual feature event. A total of 18 teams entered the fray for Shakespeare’s 108th edition.
Andy Anderson and Gerard Fernando from Senok Air Cargo were placed second last year, whilst Milinda Ratnayake and Navin De Silva of SriLankan Airlines were placed third.
