It was golf at its very best last Sunday when Amrith De Soysa exhibited some top-class golf for the appreciative members at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) when he accounted for the Cup Championship at their Club course in Borella.
This was his fifth title in the Club Championship history having also been the youngest ever winner at the age of 14 years in the 101-year-old history of the prestige club some time back. Defending champion Yannik Kumara, who won the last year event at the Centenary golf did not participate at this event as he was out of the island at present.
Amrith who was in prime form played another ever-green golfer, Sachin De Silva who was also no push over. Amrith was four up on the turn (first 18 holes) and then led eight up on the 10th on the second round.
But burly Sachin stormed back with three in a row to make it five up on the 13th but Amrith won on the 14th so it was six up by playing some exhibition golf in front of a packed Club house.
In the Ladies Club Championship, it was the 14-year-old young golfing sensation, Kaya Daluwatte continuing her good form in tandem when she defended her title beating Anashya Weerakody.
Kaya, with lot of talent with powerful long range shots was pin-point accurate in her putting. Anashya playing her first final showed lot of promise but Kaya with her experience pulled it off in sensational style.
Saneth Gamage is the RCGC Captain this year.
