The first leg of the Commanders Cup 2021 will be worked off on 20-21 March at the Sri Lanka Air Force rugby ground in Ratmalana. With five teams confirming their participation, each team will also be allowed to field their B teams, meaning the event will see a total of 10 teams locking horns in two groups.
Speaking to Daily FT, Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) Deputy President and Tournament Director Nazeem Mohamed, said: “All plans are underway and we are moving smoothly in order to organise this event. The second leg will be played a week later on 26-27 March at the same venue. Already the first and second teams of Sri Lanka Air Force Sports Club, Sri Lanka Police Sports Club, Sri Lanka Army Sports Club, Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club and Havelock Sports Club have confirmed their participation. This will give an opportunity for players from CH & FC, CR & FC and Kandy SC to participate in any of the 10 teams who will feature in this event. This will also give ample opportunity if the player wants to be considered for national Sevens selections.
“We are exploring the opportunity of playing a few matches under lights at Ratmalana. We will decide on this in the near future.”
According to reliable sources, Dialog Axiata will be the main sponsor with Daraz too propping up the balance funds for the two legs. Sri Lanka Rugby will organise the two leg event, with Sri Lanka Air Force hosting the teams. (SJ)
