A multi-functional fisheries complex, first in its nature, has been planned for north western Sri Lanka with the financial assistance from South Korea.
State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Dilip Wedaarachchi said a series of preliminary discussions were held and the decisions for structural planning of proposed multi-functional fisheries complex were reached.
The proposed multi-functional fisheries complex is planned to be built adjacent to Udappuwa beach in Chilaw and the construction of the complex will get underway in near future, the State Minister said.
This proposed multi-functional fisheries complex will include facilities for large vessels and also accommodate a fully-fledged office complex and a cold room operational centre consisting of globally accepted novel technologies.
Loan facilities for the multi-functional complex will be provided by the Republic of South Korea under concessionary basis. It has also been planned to pay back the loan, from the income generated through the services provided by the proposed facility, according to the State Minister.
The State Minister has held a discussion in this connection with special representatives of Republic of South Korea recently at the Ministry.
The discussion focused on ways to expand the services of the complex apart from fisheries industry to promote the tourism sphere and provide facilities for sea transport activities as well.
Concurrently to the proposed multi-functional fisheries complex, it has been planned with a view to enhance the development of the areas that would be of immensely contributive to the national interest such as infrastructure, housing and industrial projects along with generation of host of direct and indirect job opportunities, the Minister apprised.
