Ravindran’s appointment as Rotary Intl. President a boost for Sri LankaAsserting that Rotary International President Gary C.K. Huang’s appointment was a huge achievement, Rotary International President-elect K.R. Ravindran said Huang had been able to put his country on the map through his Rotary work. “There are a lot of similarities between the two of us. Gary was the first Chinese national to become President of Rotary International, which is a huge achievement. In doing so, he has put his country on the map; he has succeeded in doing what his whole diplomatic service could not do. He walks into the White House, he goes to see presidents and prime ministers, and suddenly Taiwan has become very prominent. “Next year I will have a similar role to play with Sri Lanka, which is not known by anyone. I have travelled to so many countries where we are known for the wrong things. Being President not only enables doing Rotary work but you also become a diplomat for your country. Huang is the best diplomat for Taiwan that I have seen in recent times and the Government strongly supports him and backs him 100% in everything he does.” Ravindran will take up his appointment as Rotary International President on 1 July 2015. Commenting on the appointment, District Governor of Rotary Sri Lanka and Maldives Gowri Rajan said: “We have produced the first Sri Lankan to head Rotary International and this will also enhance global connections to Sri Lanka.” |
