The 67th Anniversary of Independence Day of Sri Lanka was celebrated on 4 February at the premises of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Amman. The celebration commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by Sri Lanka’s Ambassador Gamini Rajapakse, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. The traditional oil lamp was lighted by the Ambassador and special invitees. Multi-faith religious observances followed and two minutes silence was observed in honour of those who scarified their lives to protect the sovereignty and peace in the country. The Independence Day Message of President Maithripala Sirisena was read in all three languages by the Ambassador, First Secretary and the Third Secretary. Addressing the gathering, the Ambassador emphasised the significant changes and developments taking place in Sri Lanka with the newly elected President Maithripala Sirisena and the Cabinet Members and congratulated them. The Ambassador also mentioned the need to further develop Sri Lanka’s relationship with the government of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. At the end of the program the invitees were treated with Sri Lanka’s traditional food items organised by the staff of the Embassy. A Diplomatic reception was organised at Amman Le Meridian Hotel in the evening of 4 February and Sri Lankan cultural dances were performed at the event sponsored by well-wishers in Jordan.
