The Greek owned and managed 12,269 DWT container carrier called in for her dry docking and lay up repairs in July 2012. Goldenport Ship Management a subsidiary of Goldenport Holdings Inc., a London Stock Exchange listed company owners/ managers to over 20 bulk and container vessels selected Colombo Dockyard on the reputation for quality repairs in the market and minimal diversion from her trading route.
MV. Brilliant completed her discharging in the port of Colombo and shifted to yard repair berth for her repairs.
Colombo’s flexibility was evident, when vessel initially indicated ETA had changed with arrival date being advance, yard managed to accommodate the vessel with these schedule changes. Shipyard managed to re-schedule the program to accommodate the vessel on her arrival. The container carrier was accommodated on arrival and shifted to dry dock thereafter to complete her repair package.
During this call the owners decided to carryout routine dry docking repairs, such as hull blasting, painting, shaft and rudder clearances were taken. The critical job during this call was the engine room blower duct steel renewal repair. The complexity of the job was high given the access difficulties and wear downed steel taking unexpected man hour consumption to complete the job successfully. The healing tank steel renewal was carried out. Deck cranes were chipped and painted. Electrical fan motor blades were moulded as replacements.
The Colombo shipyard was the best option for the owners/ managers given the strategic location soon after her deployment in the Indian coastal waters.
The Managers interests were looked after by Superintendent Engineer Panagiotis Bilos. The yard team was headed by Ship Manager Samitha Silva – who was well supported by all production departments to re-deliver the vessel. Especially steel/ hull repair Engineer Gayan Senadheera and his team did a great job, around the clock, to complete the steel renewal facing numerous challenges.
The repairs were carried out meeting the Class LR society requirements. The local agents for the vessel were MSC Lanka (Private) Ltd.
Colombo has been providing repair services to a spectrum of international container carrier, Maersk Line, Columbia Ship Management, Singapore, Arkas Shipping and Transport SA., Turkey to name a few.
Emergence of Colombo as reputed repair facility strategically located close to major international shipping routes / Indian coast is a definite plus for the owners/operators operating in the region and passing Colombo. Colombo’s shipbuilding capabilities also come in handy, with the wealth of experience in delivering sophisticated DP 2 enabled offshore support vessels to the international market. The owners have a proven repair facility capable of handling the sophisticated vessels from offshore to tankers comfortably in Colombo.
