The Institute of Human Resource Advancement (IHRA) of the University of Colombo (UOC) in partnership with the Shipping and Aviation Information Research Institute (SAIRI) and the Shippers’ Academy Colombo (SAC) for the first time has introduced a Diploma in Shipping, Transport and Logistics Management for students who have completed advanced level and for industry professionals who possess experience in the field. IHRA is one of the institutes attached to UOC which was established under Ordinance No. 11 of 1979 amended by Ordinance No. 01 of 2006. IHRA Director Dr. Rohan Perera said: “IHRA is advancing according to the global and local developments through the knowledge economy. Hence a new and an emerging economy like Sri Lanka now needs more professionals in the logistics sector as the country is moving towards a major shipping and aviation hub. This is the first time the UOC-IHRA has entered into this new sector and we hope to offer higher diploma and degree level certification in logistics after the initial diploma.” Shipping and Aviation Information Research Ltd., established in July 2009, is a company under the Ministry of Aviation. Its mission is exploring the possibility of study and researches on the ports, shipping and aviation sector. It was established for data collection, research and to conduct workshops and training programs in these sectors, explained SAIRI Chairman Nihal Hewage. Shippers’ Academy Colombo, a certified institute under the Ministry of Ports and Highways, is the very first training institution of its kind in South Asia to tailor courses for shippers and related service providers and exporters and importers who need a hybrid curriculum of shipper/trade-centric courses and to offer customised and focused education, R&D and consultancy services. SAC CEO Rohan Masakorala said that they are delighted to join hands with IHRA and SAIRI to offer this diploma and it is a great opportunity for students after A/Ls to pursue a career in international trade and transport, which is an exciting area of business for one to get into. The demand for skilled persons in this trade is high all around the world he said. Students who also complete the Logistics Services, Freight Forwarding and Multimodal Transport three-month certificate course with SAC are also eligible to join this course at IHRA, he said. The first batch will start the one year diploma in October 2013 and the IHRA is now registering the second batch which will start early 2014.
