Container freight rates fall by 2.6%

REUTERS: Shipping freight rates for transporting containers from ports in Asia to Northern Europe fell 2.6% to $ 1,598 per 20-foot container (TEU) in the week ended on Friday, one source with access to data from the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index told Reuters. Freight rates stood at $ 1,326 one year ago. Denmark’s Maersk Line has a market share of around 20% on the busy route between Asia and Europe. In the week to Friday, container freight rates dropped by 2.2% to ports in the Mediterranean, unchanged to ports on the US west coast and fell by 0.1% to ports on the US east coast.
