At the GPF Global Ports Forum Awards 2021 ceremony held at the Shangri-La Hotel in Dubai on 28 March, Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) won the GPF Awards for ‘Port Authority of the Year’ and ‘Best Public Container Terminal of The Year 2021,’ for the state owned Jaya Container Terminal (JCT).
The awards were received by SLPA’s Chairman Dr. Prasantha Jayamanna and Managing Director Upul Jayatissa at the ceremony.
The Global Ports Forum (GPF) Awards 2021 aims to recognise the most valuable contribution made by organisations and professionals in different areas of ports and terminals industry and acknowledge their roles and achievements in different categories.
From the cosmopolitan global port city of Singapore, the entrepreneurial decision was taken in 2008 to found and launch the Global Ports Forum (GPF). The awards ceremony is organised annually by the GPF, in continuation of the commitment of improving global ports and furthering the interests of ports globally through collaborations among members of the port ecosystem.
The awards are awarded based on the nominations received by the Global Ports Forum (GPF) and also in recognition of the important contributions and achievements made by organisations and professionals across the industry during the previous year.
Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) handled container terminals recorded a total volume of 2.2 million TEUs marking a year on year increase of 4.8% against 2.1 million TEUs operated in 2020.
With joint marketing strategies by the SLPA handled terminals, SAGT and CICT, the Port of Colombo (POC) recorded the highest annual container throughput in 2021. The total volume handled by the POC reached 7.25 million TEUs reflecting an increase of 5.8% against previous year’s corresponding volume of 6.85 million TEUs.
Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) was awarded the Ports Authority of the Year Award first in 2018 by the Global Ports Forum (GPF). In 2020, SLPA won the GPF Awards for ‘The Port Authority of the Year’ and ‘Port Infrastructure Development of the Year.’
