Union charges public servant privileges cut

The Trade Union Confederation says that the government has withdrawn the public servants’ privilege of being paid for the due leave not taken by the employee.

The trade unions point out that before 2007, the government made a payment for the leave the public servant has not taken. The government abolished this in 2007 but allowed the public servants to work beyond the retiring age of 60 years for a maximum of three months in accordance with the leave they had not utilised.

The Trade Union Federation says that this privilege has been abolished by Circular No. 19/2010 issued on 30 September, 2010.

The trade unions argue that this is a move to slash the benefits of public servants and urge the government to restore the system that existed till 30 September, 2010 if the government cannot pay for the leave the public servants have not taken.
