Malé International Airport is set to temporarily close on October 15 and 16 for runway renovations.During the closure, a 75 metre by four metre section of the runway on the southern side of the international airport will be resurfaced.

There is only one runway at Malé International Airport.

The closure will be in effect from midnight on 15 October until 8 a.m. on 16 October.

The airport is currently operated by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).

MACL’s Manager of Cooperate Communications, Ashraf Rahmathulla, told Maldives Traveller: “As the renovation takes place on the runway we are compelled to close the runway during working hours which is from midnight to morning on 15 and 16 October.

“The time and the date have been discussed with airlines to minimise interruption to flight movement.”

Malé International Airport is set for a major refurbishment project under a privatisation programme by a consortium of GMR and Malaysia Airports Holdings, the company which runs the world-class Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
