President Mahinda Rajapaksa advised the UPFA candidates contesting the forthcoming Local Government Elections to work as a team to propel the UPFA to victory while upholding discipline and democracy during their campaign trail.
He said so addressing the first district conference held in support of the UPFA candidates, in Anuradhapura on Monday.
The President noted that they should keep in mind that other parties too should be allowed to engage in campaigning freely.
While identifying the Pradeshiya Sabhas as a key component of village development, the President said that the present Government had given more power to local bodies.
The result of this decision is quite evident at village level as they are on the path to rapid development with the use of own expertise,” he observed.
President Rajapaksa noted that the Government’s intention in accordance with the ‘Mahinda Chinthana – Vision Ahead,’ was to establish resourceful, prosperous villages and thereby propel the country towards development and prosperity. He called on all to vote for the ‘betel leaf’ to usher economically vibrant and socially developed villages.
The President stressed that as the Government eradicated the term border villages from the Sri Lankan map it would also take steps to eradicate villages termed as under developed by bringing the fruits of development to all villages equally.
He added that UPFA had started all its victorious election campaigns from Anuradhapura after paying homage to the Sacred Sri Maha Bodhi.
The President also noted that this was the only Government which brought forth before the people its policies via ‘Mahinda Chinthana’ when seeking their consent and also the one which had fulfilled those promises to the letter.
