PCCSL and Education Ministry essay competition prize giving today

The prize giving of the All Island Essay Competition conducted by the Press Complaints Commission of Sri Lanka (PCCSL) and the Ministry of Education will be held at 10 a.m. today, 16 December, at the Auditorium of the Sri Lanka Press Institute, No: 96, Kirula Road, Colombo 5.

This is an annual event held for the fourth consecutive year. The provincial level winners of the All Island Creative Writing Competition conducted by the Ministry of Education are picked and the Press Complaints Commission sends them five topics. They choose one and write an essay between 750 to 1,000 words. The essay is then sent to the PCCSL along with a certificate signed by the school principal confirming that the essay is the work of the student.

The essays are graded jointly by senior journalists and the Ministry of Education.

In the Sinhala category, Achala Sandamali Herath of Tholanbugolla Maha Vidyalaya, Sri Sangabodhi Mawatha, Silvathgama, Galewella was placed first; H.G.M. Subodha Nayanakara of K/Bibila Deniya Sri Gunananda Central College Bibila Deniya, Udubaddawa second and W. Hashini Kaushalya Gunasekera of Dharmashoka Vidyalaya, Ambalangoda third.

In the Tamil category, B. Balachandran of Mannampitiya Tamil Maha Vidyalaya, Mannampitiya was placed first, K. Kirubashini of St. John’s Tamil Maha Vidyalaya, Rakwana second and Irin Praveena of St. Mary’s Tamil Maha Vidyalaya Puttalam third.

In the English category, Abdul Raheem Shafana of Km/Mahmud Ladies’ College, Kalmunai was placed first, Asuka Randeniye of Girl’s High School, Kandy second and Rochelle Rebecca Rosairo    of Bt/St. Cecilia’s Girls’ Maha Vidyalaya, Batticaloa third.
