Mortein, the No. 1 household insecticides brand in Sri Lanka, is celebrating 25 years of trusted and powerful protection against household pests. Globally launched in 1857, it’s a leading brand of Reckitt Benckiser.

Managing Director of Reckitt Benckiser Rahul Murgai stated: “Mortein has been leading innovation in the household protection category bringing in new products into the market to drive the pest segment.”

“As a responsible corporate citizen Mortein has built a close bond with the Sri Lankan consumers, over the years Mortein relentlessly invested in a comprehensive consumer education programme to drive awareness and prevent the spread of mosquito born diseases. As part of our 25 year anniversary celebration, Mortein for the fifth consecutive year will take forward its successful ‘Stop Diseases’ consumer education programme to key cities and towns islandwide.”

Diseases like dengue, chikungunya and malaria are growing at an alarming rate and the spread of these diseases is directly linked to abundant breeding grounds for mosquitoes. With the escalating impact and increase of the dengue menace, in 2007 Mortein commenced a national public awareness programme aimed at mosquito born diseases.

Mortein launched its dengue awareness programme ‘Operation Red Alert’ in 2007 in over 240 locations islandwide.

In 2008 its efforts to combat dengue continued with the successful Mortein Student Leaders Against Mosquitoes (SLAM) programme in association with the Ministries of Health and Education. This awareness programme covered 130 locations and 25 national schools.

In 2009 and 2010 Mortein’s ‘Stop Disease’ campaign was launched out to thousands of people daily in over 200 locations.

Product Group Manager Surangi Fernando added: “We plan to take Mortein’s powerful anti-dengue message across the country through mobile road shows and education material to create scaled awareness among communities. The programme provides insights on reducing the risk of mosquito borne diseases by taking basic preventive measures.”

Mortein hopes to realise its vision of making Sri Lanka a dengue free country in the near future.

Launched in 1986, Mortein was the first to locally manufacture and retail coils at large scale in Sri Lanka. The brand has pioneered the industry through a variety of products such as mats, aerosols and vaporisers. Globally and locally the brand maintains leadership in household protections from pests.

The Mortein range consists of coils, aerosols, vaporisers, mats, refills and rat products. Mortein is the flagship brand of Reckitt Benckiser (Lanka) Ltd., which also markets well-known household products such as Dettol, Harpic, Lysol, Airwick, Veet, Strepsils, Cardinal and Colmans.
