Katugastota Youth SC and Slimline Pannala victorious at Mini Cricket World Cup

Promoting fun and excitement – The second leg of the Mini Cricket World Cup – a friendly Six-a-Side Softball Cricket Tournament recently concluded in Kandy.

The Police Grounds in Kandy was the venue, as the salubrious climes of the hill capital played host to the second leg of The Mini Cricket World Cup. This knock-out, six-a-side, soft ball tournament is just one part of a number of promotional activities undertaken by the ICC, in the lead up to the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011.

The day’s proceedings got underway following a friendly encounter between the staff of The ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 Secretariat, Sri Lanka and the Sports Ministry.

From a group of 48 teams Katugastota Youth SC and Slimline Pannala showed true grit as they battled it out, emerging victorious and inching themselves one step closer to the chance of playing against the legends of the 1996 World Cup winning, Sri Lanka cricket team.  Commenting at the opening ceremony, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Minister of Sports said: “With the addition of Pallekele to the international cricketing circuit, the city of Kandy will be blessed with world class cricket action and the training facilities on site, will help those of you with ambitions to play for Sri Lanka one day, step closer to your dream.”

The third and final leg of the Mini Cricket World Cup is due to take place in Colombo at the St. Peter’s College Grounds on Saturday 18th December. Eager cricket teams of six and cricket crazy fans are all invited to be part of the excitement on this day.

The first leg of this tournament was held in Hambantota where Galle United and Deberawewa SC claimed victory. From each leg, two winning teams will be selected to qualify for the Grand Final to be played in Colombo, on the 8th of January at the Sport’s Ministry Grounds in Torrington.

The Grand Finals will witness the winning teams of the first three legs, facing up to each other. The eventual winner will take on a squad comprising veterans of the 1996 ICC Cricket World Cup Dream Team, an unforgettable and rare chance to experience the softer side of these leather giants.
