Insurance scheme for Lankan fishermen

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development has launched an insurance scheme for fishermen.

Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said that the bereaved families of the fishermen who face mishaps in sea would be given Rs. 100,000 through the scheme.

The scheme provides many other dividends as well, the Minister said, adding that the Ministry would look into the possibility of obtaining insurance for fishing craft as well.

The Ministry expects to provide insurance to all 175,000 active fishermen. The Minister also said that he had planned a pension scheme for fishermen over 60 years of age.
